Garden Ideas - How pet friendly is artificial grass?

In todays installment of Binghams Blog, we are going to be looking into just how pet friendly artificial grass really is.

Synthetic grass is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners looking for pet-friendly ideas, as an alternative to a traditional lawn.

Artificial turf demands less upkeep and maintenance, requires no water to stay looking fresh, and can be enjoyed all year-round. However, many people have questions and concerns regarding their pets and how they might be affected by a switch to fake grass.

The good news is that artificial lawns are safe for pets and are typically more resilient than natural lawns when it comes to the wear and tear inflicted by dogs and cats. That said, here are a few factors to consider before introducing your furry friends to your new artificial lawn.

Fresh, Fun and Family friendly - Artificial grass isn’t just for humans to enjoy.

Be it lounging out in the sun, a fun game of fetch, or an evening run about before bed, artificial grass allows a safe, fun and clean experience for both 2 and 4 legged friends.

Even canine sports are now using AstroTurf for training and competition venues!

Pets can be tough on lawns, but thankfully a modern garden turf, with the right construction elements, offers a combination of comfort and durability that makes it ideal for your pets.

The grass is completely safe for pets, although we advise they don’t eat it!

How safe is Synthetic grass safe for dogs?

This is a commonly asked question by pet owners, but in short, YES!  Artificial grass is safe for your dogs and other pets.

The modern designs allow urine to slip through the grass barriers without effecting the products integrity or aesthetics and leaving minimal, if any residue.

Artificial grass is easy to clean when it comes to pet droppings. Larger deposits would need to be cleaned up but the grass can simply be hosed down and wiped off to be kept clean and hygienic.

With a quick clean once a day the synthetic grass will look and smell as good as new!

Built to last - Will my dogs damage the artificial turf?

Obviously over many years, signs or wear will occur - Nothing lasts forever unfortunately.

However, the surfaces we install are all resilient and capable of withstanding very high amounts of footfall, be that from the 2 or 4-legged kind.

A common first question is whether they should let their dogs relieve themselves on the synthetic grass. In short, yes they can!

Pet waste won’t negatively impact your artificial grass, and the false turf is super easy to clean.

The tight, but permeable backing allows urine and fluids to drain. In fact, smaller sections are often used for designated pet potties due to these features.

Pets tend to go where they know, be it the litter box, that special patch of gravel, or grass.

With the correct Introduction to artificial grass, pets accustomed to using the natural stuff, will usually adapt after a short transitional period.

If your dog urinates on your artificial grass regularly, simply spray the area with a mild disinfectant. The urine and cleaning products will drain away quickly after cleaning and will not stain your artificial grass.

Safety first, watch the chewers!

Some dogs or cats simply can’t resist the urge to chew or lick an artificial grass surface, especially a newly installed one.

This is typically fine (so long as they don't eat it), as artificial grass is often less toxic than chemically treated natural grass.

The bottom line is that artificial grass can be safely enjoyed by every member of your family, even four-legged ones, so long as you choose the right kind!

Big benefits to choosing a synthetic lawn for your pets

There are numerous benefits to having synthetic turf in your garden, especially when it comes to your little friends. Listed below are just a few reasons why;

It won’t get sodden and muddy so there will be no muddy paw prints left inside your house.

It will stay fresh and spongy, meaning it’s comfortable and not too firm and crisp under feet.

There will be no spots ruined by energetic animals playing or leaving their business.

It can’t be dug up by dogs looking for treasure and bones.

How much does a dog friendly synthetic surface cost?

Unfortunately, this is almost like asking ‘how long is a piece of string?’.

To cover your garden in dog friendly artificial grass, the price will obviously vary depending on how big your space is, and which style of grass you choose.

There are advantages to each of the different types of grass, but ultimately it comes down to what you want in your garden or home and what is going to look and feel the best for your feet and your pets paws.
